Lymphatic Drainage Massage
What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage Therapy?
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialized form of massage therapy that helps move lymph fluids towards the lymph nodes where the body can dispose of wastes.
The lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining our immune system and fighting infections. It consists of a large network of vessels and nodes that drains, filters, and removes wastes from our tissues. When lymph fluids build up in areas of the body such as the legs and arms, swelling could occur (edema). This condition is also known as lymphedema, most commonly caused by damage to your lymph nodes from birth, infections, cancer treatments, or other factors.
As the lymphatic system relies of the movement of smooth muscles to transport fluids, lymphatic drainage massage is performed to move excess lymph fluids out of swollen tissues. The body’s elimination channels are improved and your ability to release toxins is greatly boosted.
Who can Benefit from Lymphatic Drainage?
Lymphatic drainage massage can benefit people who are experiencing the following:
• lymphedema
• skin disorders
• swollen legs, ankle, arms, and body
• tissues swelling (edema)
• fatigue
• insomnia
• arthritis
• migraines
• stress
• digestive problems
• replaced knee / hip / ankle surgery recovery
Many patients have also benefited from a boosted immune system, improved circulations, and increased energy levels.
What to Expect at a Lymphatic Massage Session
Lymphatic drainage massage is often gentle since the lymph vessels are just right under the skin. Compared to the typical massage treatment, the movements are much lighter and can be described like “feather touch”. A session begins with an initial assessment with specific questions to understand your condition. Then, the massage therapist will discuss the treatment plan and techniques involved. After therapy, you may feel a little tired and that is normal. This is because your body expanded energy to increase its lymph flow to eliminate accumulated toxins. Simply rest, drink water, and allow your body to rest.
At We-Fix-U Physio Clinics, Lymphatic drainage therapy is only performed by Registered Massage Therapists who are trained at the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
