Question: Angie (Age 42)

Dear Physiotherapist Dave,

Getting ready in the morning is becoming more and more difficult. Trying to pull my shirt over my head, even washing my hair hurts. I’m only 42, why is this so painful and what should I do?

Answer: Physiotherapist Dave

Dear Angie,

You are not alone. Shoulder pain is the most common pain treated by our physiotherapy team in Bowmanville. The shoulder is an unstable joint because of all the range of motion it allows. This instability increases your risk of injury often leading to pain and preventing you from doing your normal, day to day activities. Shoulder pain has many symptoms which are dependent on the cause of the pain. If you are unable to carry objects, raise your arm or have pain during rest that persists beyond a few days, it is time for you to visit a physiotherapist to determine the cause of your symptoms. Physiotherapy is an important aspect of treatment of almost all muscle and joint conditions.  Our goal is to increase your strength, regain mobility and help you return to your pre-injury level of activity. There are a few things you can do at home to help your comfort before your assessment at We-Fix-U:

  1. Protect your shoulder. Avoid repetitive movements (such as when using your computer mouse) and/or reaching above shoulder height.
  2. Apply ice or heat – consult with a professional to see which one is best for you.
  3. Increase stability with strength. Strengthen your shoulder muscles with pain free exercises.
  4. Correct your posture (pull your shoulders back) prior to using your painful arm.

When in doubt, ask a physio professional in BowmanvilleCobourgOshawaPort Hope, and Peterborough for help and save your shoulder a lot more pain or surgery. If you have further questions, you could book an appointment with us.

All the best, Angie
